1776 May 19 Revolution
The Provincial Congress has named Shrewsbury’s Artemas Ward FIRST! Commander-in-Chief of the American Revolution. He will work closely with George Washington and play an important part in America’s independence.
General Ward ran a general store in the house at 616 Main Street where he sold stock ranging from dry goods to rum. He was also a tax assessor, town clerk, justice of the peace, selectman, lawyer and judge. He moved to the old section of his family home with his six children in 1762. Visitors are still welcome there at 786 Main Street.
