1797 Education
The town has awarded 30 pounds as the first grant for a "Woman’s School", appointing seventeen year old Sally Flint as "Dame". Flint will be paid 7 pounds for three months of teaching.
Lydia Tyler, age 10, is threading her needle with embroidery floss and carefully stitching X after X to form letters and words on her sampler. Along with the usual alphabet, Lydia includes the name of her teacher, Sally Flint, as well. This sampler will later become part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
