Nymphas Pratt has opened a huge tannery on Main Street across from South Street.

He will eventually tan up to 300 sides of leather a day and help fulfill the need for saddles, shoes and service bags during the Civil War.

Pratt’s company will become the Nelson & Rice Tannery around 1873.
