"War meetings" are being held to help Civil War soldiers and their families. Payment for service is $1.00 a day to soldiers in service, $1.50 a week to soldiers’ wives and $.50 a week to soldiers’ children under 15 years old.

The town has purchased uniforms and equipment. It will also contribute towards expenses of bringing home the bodies of fallen soldiers.

175 Shrewsbury residents will volunteer to fight by the end of the Civil War; 25 of them will give their lives fighting for the Union.
