1900 Industry
Herbert A. Cook has eight colossal greenhouses off Floral Street. Here he has 17,000 carnation plants that were started from 60,000 cuttings. Cook ships between 5,000-10,000 cut carnations to Boston weekly and a total of 300,000 yearly. Nivea, a beautiful white, and Dorothy Mandell, a rose pink, are results of Cooks own cross breeding. He is constantly experimenting to create new varieties.
October to August he also grows asparagus, tomatoes and last year 14 tons of squash. There are also 600 young peach trees on the hill.
