1920 August 28 Government
Nettie G. Arkwell of Main Street, age 40, is registering to vote for the first time. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution was approved ten days ago and all women over the age of 21 are now eligible to vote.
We will be at the polls if we have to go on snowshoes and skis!" one new voter comments. She will be one of the 450 women out of 1400 Shrewsbury voters who will cast their vote in the election of the 29th President. "Everyone will answer the roll call on the day the ballots are cast and some are strong for suffrage and some not, but all will vote on principle."
Matilda Allen is the third woman to register, age 78. She is known as a "Poetess" and shares her feelings.
Long years we "women voters"
awaited the decree
Declaring that ballot to women-
kind is free"
Perchance by patient waiting we did
not lose but gained,
Since clearer, broader vision of
civics was attained;
And though the years are fleeting
this, shall our slogan be,
"To carry on in civics with true
fidelity".
