In 1913 C. H. Hutchins built a Georgian style brick house set back from Maple Avenue and gave it to his daughter as a wedding gift. The Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology purchased the property in 1945 and moved their one year old research facility from Worcester to Shrewsbury.
The research of Dr. Min-Chueh Chang and Dr. Gregory Pincus leads to the development of the oral contraceptive. The Worcester Foundation will later be world famous as the birthplace of the birth control pill and in-vitro fertilization. The Worcester Foundation will later merge with University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1997.
